Military tents have long been used to house troops and support staff in remote areas.
But the deployment of a new tent is being seen as a step towards a wider rethinking of the role of military tents.
In July last year, the Australian Army said it was considering a plan to build an additional military tent in Australia’s northern and eastern regions, with the plan likely to include a military-style tent for troops.
The tent will be built in a remote area at Camp Burdon, about 1km from the border with New Zealand.
The army said it would be ready to deploy tents for the first time in 2021.
The camp was established in the early 1950s as a military base for Australia’s navy and later the Australian Air Force.
